Ubisoft+ Spotlight - I Am Alive
(Editorial note: This is a series of quick weekly highlights written by Ubisoft News team writers that feature games available with a Ubisoft+ subscription. We hope you'll enjoy reminiscing with us, or perhaps discover something new.)
Brittany Spurlin, Writer/Editor: If you're looking to play a game set in a realistic, post-apocalyptic world, look no further than I Am Alive. The 2012 game takes place in the fictional town of Haventon, approximately one year after a mysterious catastrophe known only as "The Event," which has left resources scarce, a dangerous and toxic environment, and, of course, a broken society full of different groups of survivors. You take the role of an unnamed protagonist, a man searching for his wife and daughter, who records his journey while helping others in the city. Between that and stories from various NPCs you rescue throughout the game, I Am Alive tells a heart-wrenching tale about The Event and its immediate aftermath. A game centered on the concept of survival, you are forced to make hard, at times emotionally moving, choices from start to finish.
I Am Alive's gameplay is nothing less than exquisite, in my opinion. It has a unique parkour system that is entirely dependent on stamina, shown in a bar at the top of the screen. A considerable portion of the game consists of climbing the half-destroyed city, but every action, even just hanging on a ledge, takes up stamina. Run out in a precarious situation, and you'll fall to your death. This makes planning your climbing route crucial to survival, so you can make sure to take the path of least resistance. Of course, it is possible to refill your stamina, but that means choosing to use one of your precious resources to do so - something you may regret later in the game when you really need it.
Resource management is key to surviving to the end of I Am Alive, and it's closely tied with the decisions you'll have to make throughout gameplay. Do you want to use that bullet now, or save it to defend yourself from a vicious gang attack later? Do you want to use your invaluable healing kit on this wounded NPC, or wait until you really need it? To make matters more complicated, the game will reward players with a Retry for helping NPCs, which can be used to respawn where they last died instead of at their last checkpoint. You can also choose how you want to interact with confrontational groups of survivors. Pointing an unloaded gun at them can intimidate a group out of attacking you - but if you hold it up too long without taking a shot, they just may call your bluff and attack anyway. Likewise, you can try and negotiate out of situations, or kill the leader first, hoping the underlings will scurry away.
