The first glimpse of For Honor's gameplay, just revealed during Ubisoft's E3 press conference, might look familiar at first. After all, you've almost certainly played medieval hack-and-slashers before. You've probably even played a few about slicing your way through entire armies. But For Honor, with its pitched battles that send crowds of knights, Vikings and samurai crashing against each other, is something new, requiring skill and tactical thinking as well as brutality – and that becomes more apparent once you've seen it in action.

Combining the fast pacing of a shooter with the careful strategy of a fencing sim, For Honor casts you as a medieval special-ops soldier, capable of turning the tide of a battle by ripping through crowds of rank-and-file foes and dueling your heroic enemy counterparts to the (gruesome) death. At the center of its combat is the Art of Battle system, which – once you're locked on to an opponent – lets you change your soldier's stance to automatically block enemy strikes and get around their defenses. Attendees at E3 will have the chance to wade onto For Honor's battlefields themselves well ahead of its arrival on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, so expect to see hands-on impressions very soon.
